Canopies for Schools – What do you need to know?

If you are thinking of installing a canopy in a school there are several things you need to consider:

The school canopy must be robust enough to withstand strong winds. Many school buildings have open spaces around them such as playgrounds and sports fields and a school canopy can be exposed to strong winds. It is important that a commercial grade canopy is installed and one that has been properly tested. Our school canopies are tested to BS EN 1991-1-3:2003+A1:2015 Actions on Structures, ensuring they can withstand bad weather and they also come with a 10 year Warranty as standard.

Can the school canopy be attached directly onto the school wall?
If you are looking for a canopy that has no legs at the back and is attached to the school wall, then the wall must be robust enough to take the weight of the canopy and withstand wind uplift. As a general rule of thumb if your school building is single storey then it is unlikely the wall will be strong enough to support the canopy without rear legs. If your school building has a brick or stone wall and is more than one storey high then you should be ok attaching a canopy to the wall. If in doubt contact a builder for advice.

What types of school canopies are there?
There are many types of canopies that are offered to schools from fabric canopies to cantilever canopies. At the Canopy Shop we sell robust, rigid framed canopies as we feel these offer greater flexibility and lifespan. Our school canopies have a strong aluminium frame and a choice of shatterproof polycarbonate or glass for the roof. As well as being strong the materials in our school canopies are lightweight meaning installation is quick and easy. We also give a 10 Year Guarantee on all our school canopies.

Do your school canopies come in different styles?
Yes, we can offer a number of different styles and sizes to suit your school. Our most popular style is the Lean To School Canopy which is attached at the rear and rectangular in shape. We can also do a free standing rectangular shape which can be located away from the school building anywhere on your school grounds. Our Apex Canopies which are free standing are often used as additional eating or study areas.

Do you offer a fitting service?
We don’t offer a fitting service because we believe our customers will be able to get their canopy fitted for less money by using a local builder. Our school canopies are manufactured to make the installation easy; the materials are cut to size and bars prepped and we supply full Assembly Instructions. If your school has a builder they have used in the past and trust then they can install your canopy, so why pay extra when you don’t need to? Also, because we are an online retailer our prices are very competitive and we are always available to offer advice if you or your builder needs it.

What sizes do your school canopies come in?
We can supply all our canopies in a range of sizes, send us your requirements and we will send you a Price Quotation. All our school canopies are made to measure so we can accommodate your requirements.

How do I fit the posts?
There are two methods for fitting the posts; you can either dig a hole and embed the posts in a concrete block, (approx. 500mm x 500mm), or we can provide you with base plates for fixing down onto a concrete surface. There is no surcharge for base plates, just let us know which method you are going to use when you place the order.

Once in place is there a way of protecting the posts?
Yes, we offer Post Protectors which are foam filled vinyl pads that both protect the canopy posts as well as preventing harm to children should they collide with the posts.
